Despite the many challenges faced by all, the life sciences industry continues to excel. Record-breaking rates of fundraising, rapid expansion of lab space, and job growth are the key themes of the recently released MassBio 2021 Industry Snapshot.

The report indicates Woburn and Beverly (both "Platinum BioReady" communities) are well-represented with large numbers of MassBio life sciences members.
MassBio also highlights the future challenge of finding enough talent to meet anticipated need for up to 40,000 net-new employees anticipated in the region by 2024.

North Shore InnoVentures Growing Blue Economy
North Shore InnoVentures (NSIV) is among the local partners in UMass Amherst's plan to build and implement a sustainable and resilient "blue economy" ecosystem on the North Shore.
"Our goal is to help startups in the 'BlueTech' innovation space by providing a similar model to our existing incubator program for both life sciences and cleantech," said Chris Ilsley, president and CEO of NSIV. "For BlueTech startups, this might include a package of tangible assets, such as access to docks, vessels, and wet lab space, along with intangible resources, including guidance from marine law experts, business development, and other business services."
This effort will build on MetroNorth's growing strengths and create economic growth while preserving the health of the ocean. NSIV is already working with various local and statewide partners, and plans to develop a pipeline of startups and ideas. These activities will contribute to the creation of a North Shore Innovation ecosystem attracting overseas, institutional, and corporate interests to the region.
To get involved in NSIV's BlueTech efforts, please contact 978-867-0600.

Sneak Peek: Medford
To meet the demand for additional lab space in the Boston area, Cummings has proposed a two-story building addition at 200 Boston Avenue, just north of the soon-to-be-complete Green Line Extension. Conceived with the support of the Medford economic development office, the project features 39,000 GSF of lab-ready space on two upper levels and 2,000 GSF of amenity space on the ground floor. An additional parking level at the south end of the site is screened with a solar support structure.
