Sharing some news from farther afield than our MetroNorth region, Northeastern University broke ground Friday on a permanent Portland, Maine campus that will be home to the Roux Institute and new Alfond Center. Boston Business Journal reports that the campus will transform the former B&M Baked Beans industrial site into a cutting edge multi-building complex that will serve as a hub for education and research about AI and other high-tech, high-growth fields. The Roux Institute opened in 2020 thanks to a $100 million donation from technology entrepreneur David Roux and his wife, Barbara.

We are pleased to welcome River Otter Renewables to the Cummings portfolio of clean tech companies. Now located at 3 Gill Street in Woburn, River Otter has a patented process that can produce biocrude oil from waste, including plant, food, sewage, and some plastic.


Amelia Thomas, CEO, worked with Cummings business development officer Al Diamond to identify the right space for River Otters' innovative research and development needs.

Educational nonprofit Science from Scientists has expanded from Bedford to Cummings Properties' Tower Office Park in Woburn.


Founded by Erika Angle, Ph.D., the organization's mission is to teach and inspire the next generation to identify and solve real-world problems by improving STEM literacy. The 4,700 SF facility will serve as the national nonprofit’s New England headquarters.

Akston Biosciences Corporation (100 Cummings Center, Beverly) recently announced a strategic partnership with Purdue University to co-develop an anti-cPD-L1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) immunotherapy to treat cancer in dogs. Akston is dedicated to accelerating the biologics revolution in animal health. Through this partnership, Akston will add another potential therapy for treating cancer, expanding its rich pipeline of candidates for animal health conditions, including chronic pain, atopic dermatitis and obesity.

ZwitterCo (12 Cabot Road, Woburn) has announced its first chief commercial officer, Myron Van Ert. Filtration and Separation reports that Van Ert will oversee the implementation of ZwitterCo's growth strategies in North America and around the world, driving partnerships and the commercial adoption of the company's zwitterionic membrane technology. He brings nearly three decades of experience in the water industry to ZwitterCo, most recently serving as senior vice president of global key accounts at Veolia.

High-performance Li-metal battery developer and manufacturer SES AI Corporation (35 Cabot Road, Woburn) recently announced a major step in its commercialization of this next-generation battery technology. The Company’s 100 Ah Li-metal cells for automotive applications are the first in the industry to successfully pass safety tests required by China’s GB38031-2020 Electric Vehicles Traction Battery Safety Standard. This certification is used by all of SES AI’s EV OEM partners, as well as many of the other leading manufacturers, as a global standard.

Innovations in Optics (10 Gill Street, Woburn) announced the launch of the LumiSun-50TM (patent pending). This innovative, compact benchtop LED solar simulator has vast potential applications, ranging from PV cell testing and research, photochemistry, biological studies, phototherapy and photodynamic therapy research, to materials testing, weathering tests, and more. Its ability to provide A+A+A+ illumination over a defined area can be used for measuring the efficiency and spectral response of PV cells, conducting solar degradation studies, and other sunlight-related research.
