Cummings Properties' speed-to-market and service excellence are grounded in a strong culture of teamwork, communication, creativity, camaraderie, and shared achievement.
Collaboration sparks ingenuity, and both are key tenets of the culture at Cummings. From leasing and property management to design and construction, Cummings does it all in house. Our ability to see a project through from concept to completion relies on open communication and teamwork across disciplines and at all levels. To that end, our offices are designed with an open floor plan, featuring open cubes, collaboration tables, and assorted shared spaces designed to accommodate frequent meetings of the minds—be they scheduled or impromptu.
Senior leadership encourages a free and open exchange of ideas. Email and text exchanges rank a far second to in-person conversation, which so often leads to unanticipated synergies in our workplace. Managers at Cummings follow a strict open-door policy, welcoming any employee to stop in without ceremony and share questions, concerns, suggestions, etc. (Team members who wish to share feedback anonymously are given a voice through sealed “suggestion boxes.”)
Colleagues at Cummings benefit from frequent opportunities to expand their skills and build knowledge. Many team members take advantage of tuition and licensing reimbursement benefits to advance their careers at minimal personal expense.
Employees also receive sustained on-the-job training, continually learning from their more experienced teammates within a mentorship culture that encourages continued professional development. In fact, all staff are encouraged to develop the teammate they’d like to see succeed them when they advance to a new role. The resulting profound talent pool allows Cummings to maintain its strong history of promoting from within.
In many ways, the strength of our organization is a direct result of the talented, hardworking professionals who make up the Cummings team. We believe in the importance of celebrating professional achievements, personal milestones, seasonal occasions, and, above all, a job well done.
Cummings benefits from unusual employee longevity, and special anniversaries spark elaborate celebration with service awards, lively at-work gatherings, and creative, personalized mementos.
Colleagues enjoy Company-sponsored after-work fun throughout the year. These team-building activities range from softball and kickball games to fishing trips and harbor cruises, go-kart racing, fitness and cooking classes, trivia night, axe-throwing, and so much more. We’ve hosted employee “Hot Ones” hot sauce competitions, and even scored a “Peoples’ Choice” award at Boston’s Canstruction competition.
Colleagues also have the opportunity to enjoy an annual stay at East Hill Farm, a scenic country resort located in the foothills of New Hampshire. This Company-subsidized three-day retreat provides an ideal summer getaway for families and singles alike.
Cummings Properties’ tagline says it best: “All Profits to Nonprofits” means that we stand for corporate citizenship and community building. Specifically, 100 percent of all rental profits from the buildings owned by Cummings Foundation and the Cummings family goes to local nonprofits.
Staff members enjoy regular opportunities to participate in the Company’s community-building efforts. In addition to working on behalf of the Foundation in their everyday roles, colleagues are annually invited to serve on the volunteer committees charged with selecting 150 nonprofits to share in major funding through the Cummings $30 Million Grant Program, and to participate in the one-of-a-kind Grant Winner Celebration.
November is a particularly joyous time at Cummings, thanks to a unique employee benefit that again invites staff to take an active role in reinvesting those profits in the community. Through the annual Cummings Community Giving program, employees are invited to direct a $2,000 donation—from the Company, made in the employee’s name—to the local nonprofit of their choice.
“All work and no play” is not the Cummings way. We believe in hard work and high productivity—with a side of fun. Whether enjoying a Company-sponsored steak cookout, decorating pumpkins for Halloween, competing in a multi-week office “Olympics” tournament, or showing team spirit on a sports-themed casual day, we keep things fresh by periodically breaking up the routine.
